About Dr. Sam
I was born in Columbus, GA to first-generation Korean American parents, who immigrated to the US in their 20s. I am currently an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Denver and a licensed psychologist. I am also licensed and certified to provide tele-psychological services in over 25 states. I teach, or have taught, graduate students in counseling, interventions, and psychological assessment.
My approach to mental health is grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, and I use Cognitive-Behavioral approaches. In other words, I want to get to know your context so that I can best help you. I believe that a person's inner world can be seen and understood from their thoughts, behaviors, and environment. Everyone has the capacity to bring about change, and many just need someone to walk alongside them in the journey of change.
I work with those who are:
experiencing new transitions in life (e.g., new jobs, new locations)
of a bicultural or multicultural background and have intersection of multiple identities
exploring their own identities and personal development (e.g., 2nd / 3rd generation immigrant family, new work roles, parenting, LGBTQ+)
struggling with stresses in an Asian American context
